Summer is here! Who doesn't want to be outside? Not the kids, especially those who have been constricted to the classrooms for the last ten months. So parents, whether you are hitting the beach, lying at the poolside, or playing in the park, being in the outdoors equates to outdoor sun exposure.

While the outdoors can result in having fun in the sun, do much of anything is never a good thing, as the old adage goes. So for the little ones this means protecting them by means of having them wear hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, and how can we forget the oh so thick, sticky, gunky, SUNSCREEN. Your child may not be too fond of sunscreen, especially when its first applied. But better they whine and complain initially, than cry from the pain, swelling and discomfort of sunburns.

So how does Sunscreen Work Anyway?

Sunscreen helps protect the skin from the sun's UV (Ultra Violet) Rays, when outdoors. SPF stands for Skin Protective Factor. It is a number that helps determine how long you can stay in the sun before getting sunburn. Let's take for example, you can stay out in the sun for 15 minutes before burning, if you used a sunscreen with an SPF of 10, you would then be able to increase the amount of time you can stay in the sun without burning to 150 minutes or 2.5 hours. You multiply the amount of time it takes for you to burn by the SPF of the sunscreen.

Be wary though, sunscreen does wear off. Swimming and sweating does cause it to wear off. Reapply after every two hours.

Happy Summer!
